The concept of "workcation," where people combine work and vacation in scenic locations rather than traditional offices, is gaining attention as a new work trend. Workcations are especially popular among office workers looking for a break from their routine. Additionally, as the benefits of workcations—such as increased work efficiency and boosting local population inflows—become more widely known, domestic companies and local governments are also showing interest. So, how has the workcation trend evolved in 2024? Let's take a look at the trends through data analysis.
In Korea, it is largely classified into three types: 'sea type', 'urban type', and 'rural type' according to regional characteristics. According to the time series analysis, 'sea type' workplaces received the most attention among office workers in the first half of 2024.
However, notable changes have been observed in 'rural type' workplaces. Although it received relatively less attention in the first half of the year, 'rural type' workplaces surged to the top of the list in terms of mentions in July. As more and more people seek healing experiences in a calm natural environment, 'rural type' workplaces seem to be emerging as a new workstation trend.
We also looked into whom workcation users want to take with them on their trips. According to frequency analysis, the most frequently mentioned keyword was "family" (424 mentions). This was followed by "friends" (327 mentions), "solo" (320 mentions), and "children" (238 mentions).
As the preferences of workcation users for companions are quite diverse, it seems that there is a growing need to develop targeted workcation infrastructure and content. This could include pet-friendly accommodations or couple-oriented one-day classes for romantic partners.
As previously mentioned, workcation has emerged as a major topic among office workers, companies, and local governments. Recently, local governments facing population decline have been actively promoting various workcation projects as a strategy to secure a stable living population. Given that the issue of regional population decline is becoming a serious social problem, the expansion of workcation initiatives by local governments is expected to continue.
Since expectations for workcations vary based on regional characteristics, it will be effective to build workcation infrastructure and content that appropriately reflects the unique qualities of each area to attract a living population. We hope that the workcation system will be successfully established in Korea and play an important role as a solution to regional population decline.
